Singer-songwriter and guitarist Natasha Meister from London, Ontario is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She has over ten years of experience in the industry, much of it spent in South Africa.

Natasha had a very grassroots mindset about her career, often finding gigs by walking into venues and performing a short set for them. She was the first female artist in South Africa to be endorsed by Fender, and opened for the Pixies and LIVE with her band The Sweet Resistance.

Listen in as we chat about what did to move her career forward without live performances, how she started her music career in South Africa, and why it’s important to learn the business side of the industry.

Her recent single Diamond Kiss is available on streaming platforms.

Quotes that stood out

  • “You just own it and be comfortable and confident in your own skin. And people feed off of that.”

  • “It's easy to disappear during these times and close up and not be anywhere to be found. But I think if you want to maintain that fan base and let them know you're still around and you're gonna get out there once things are better then they'll stick with you on your journey.”

  • “The business side of music is way more complicated than I ever actually realized. A piece of advice would be to learn about the business side of it because I know being creative as we are most of the time, we don't want to learn about that.”

  • “You can't have the creative side without the business side. You can be the most talented person, but if you don't have the team, or if you don't have the knowledge yourself you're just gonna get lost in the noise.”
