2018 in Review

I’m going to be completely honest here...I’ve tried to write this post for the last 3 weeks and I keep. getting. stuck. I’m not sure why, because 2018 was the first year of the business and one that I know will be a milestone.
So instead of going on and on detailing everything that happened for the business in 2018, I’m going to take a page from a few female entrepreneurs I follow and choose a word of the year. For 2018, it was beginning.
Where It All Started
When I think back to the beginning, and I mean to before I launched the podcast, the blog, and my site, to before I thought of the idea of highlighting women in the music industry and providing resources to women just starting out, to before I even thought of being an entrepreneur (basically we’re going back to literally day 1 of 2018), I realized it all came from one Tweet.
How can one Tweet create an entire business?
I wouldn’t be here with Broken Glass Media if I didn’t follow Patti Murin (Chicago Med, Frozen on Broadway) on Twitter. Back at the beginning of 2018, Patti was starting a book recommendation a day and the book for January 1 was Jen Sincero’s You Are a Badass. I’d heard about the book from others, seen it on social media, and passed by it in bookstores and always thought “I really should check it out.,” but I always had an excuse.
There’s always that feeling with a new year, of starting anew, picking up new habits, and bettering oneself. So, inspired by Patti’s recommendation (and her Goodreads book club) I stopped by Target and picked up a copy.
I flew that book in about 2 days. And then devoured You Are a Badass at Making Money. I thought “Where can I find more of Jen?” and started searching her name in Apple Podcasts. The first episode the search generated was from the She Did It Her Way Podcast, and I loved the episode with Jen so much that I subscribed to the podcast, and made my way through past episodes learning all about female entrepreneurship.
It snowballed from there with the release of the USC Annenberg Inclusion in the Recording Studio? report and the 2018 Grammy’s, which had just one female winner on the broadcast. I thought, “We’re here. Women are in the industry or trying to get in the industry. What part can I play in showing that to the world?”
The Broken Glass Blog was born.
I launched myself into a new sphere, continuing at my 9-5 while attempting to build my own business, something that can bring women to the forefront of the industry, all while providing tools and resources to women who want to be in the industry. I read more business books, took a giant leap of faith (and out of my comfort zone) and flew to Chicago for the She Did It Her Way Summit, joined Amanda Boleyn’s Her Way Society membership group, and continue to devour entrepreneurship podcasts like it’s my job. Oh, and I started my own podcast, launched a Facebook group (The Broken Glass Collective), traveled to my alma mater to speak on publishing (my 9-5) and entrepreneurship, and made countless connections with women in the industry.
If you asked me on December 31, 2017 what my plans for 2018 were, I never in a million years would have said “entrepreneurship.”
I am proud of what I built in 2018, proud of the beginnings of something that can grow, provide support, and connect women across the country and the world. And it all started from one, simple Tweet.
Looking Ahead
Growth. That’s the word for 2019.
I spent 2018 finding my groove, launching pieces of the business, and connecting with women in the industry and other female entrepreneurs through the Her Way Society. Now that the pieces are in place, 2019 will be filled with developing and growing the business, continuing to connect with women, and to connect women with each other. I have ideas running rampant in my head (squirrel syndrome anyone?) and can’t wait to share my ideas with my readers, listeners, and my followers. And I want your opinion on all of these things, because this business is really about you - what you need, what you want:
Membership group with courses, workbooks, trainings and more
Individual courses, workbooks, and trainings
Quarterly subscription box with career and entrepreneur oriented items
Events (local to Los Angeles to begin) with speakers and networking opportunities
My brain is seriously chock full of ideas for 2019 right now, so comment below to let me know what you are looking for from Broken Glass Media.
Here’s to growth in 2019: in the business, in myself, and in all of you.
(And a HUGE thank you to Patti Murin because really, you helped me kick start this entire thing).
