Episode 48: Overcoming Industry Shifts and Stigmas in Music with Kayti Korte
Kayti Korte is my guest on the podcast this week. She’s the singer and bass player for the duo Desperate Electric and we dive deep into how the band has transitioned from full time touring to isolating and performing from home, the stigmas of being a woman in music and how she overcomes it, and why it's important to think of your career and band like a business.
Quotes that Stood Out:
“If you want something to be your job, you have to make it your job.”
“If you break it down, I think that we can see the value in spending an amount of money to have that time back.”
Regarding the stigma of being a woman in a band: “It’s not assumed that women could be in bands, and it’s definitely assumed that they’re not going to play an instrument.”
“As a female singer you have to be amazing or people literally think you suck.”
“We’re all making art and everybody should feel like they can do that and they feel supported to do that in whatever capacity they want.”
“Find your people, find your support system.”
“Don’t be afraid to reach out to people who are doing it.”
“At the end of the day, people in the music industry are all pretty much going through the same thing, just on different scales.”
